You probably have heard about “sexual peaks,” and that they occur at different times for men and for women, somewhere around “18” for men, and considerably later for women somewhere in the “40s.” While there is some biological truth to this common belief, it really has very little impact on your overall sexual desires and performance.

One thing that is not in dispute, is that men and women both start to be sexually attracted to one another soon after puberty, though to a somewhat differing degree.

Libido, or sex drive is largely determined by hormones, so it stands to reason that any kind of sexual peak, would occur when those hormones that influence your desire for sexual activity, are at their “peak” levels.

Around puberty the endocrine systems of both men and women start releasing the hormones that stimulate sexual attraction. For boys that means more testosterone, for girls, estrogen. If we take it from there, with a strictly biological point of view, sex hormone output in both men and women reaches its physiological “peak,” in the 20s. Yet common wisdom says only men “peak” at that time, and for women it occurs later, in the 30s or even 40s.

What this says in reality is that your individual true sexual peak has as much to do with many other factors and influences, then merely the levels of sex hormones in your blood. Many women are as sexually active as men in their 20s, and today, both men and women are enjoying active and healthy sex lives well into their 50s and beyond.

So, in reality, while biologically there may be such a thing as a “sexual peak,” it really matters very little to anyone who would like to perform at his or her “personal peak” throughout his or her sexually active lifetime.

  • Get enough sleep.

  • Make more time for sex.
