Platelet Rich Plasma and Female Sexual Dysfunction

We hear a lot about Viagra and solutions for “erectile dysfunction” in men. What about women? Women too, experience sexual wellness issues as they grow older, and while they may not be as “physically” obvious as the difficulties experienced by their male counter parts, they can be no less devastating.

Women who are approaching menopause, in menopause, or are post-menopausal experience a range of sexual wellness issues collectively known as Female Sexual Dysfunction or FSD. The symptoms of FSD can include:

  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Lack of stimulation
  • Decreased ability to achieve or maintain orgasms
  • Painful intercourse
  • Loss of sexual desire, or decreased libido

For a long time FSD has largely been ignored by mainstream medicine. However, recently the FDA and the Pharmaceutical industry has been actively pursuing a “pink Viagra.” Those who read my recent blog post on “Female Viagra and FSD” know how I feel about the direction of such research.

Women and Sexual Dysfunction

A true definition of Female Sexual Dysfunction has been kind of elusive. In men it is clear what “sexual dysfunction” is, in women not so much.

In my practice, and in my experience, it matters little what it is called. I can tell you, I see women who are not enjoying sexual activity the way they used to, and I know they deserve better!

The simple fact of the matter is, as women get older, their bodies change. With those changes can also come some less than desirable sexual issues. Most of these involve physical changes to the vagina and the vaginal walls.

Hormonal changes also bring about less lubrication, and reduced stimulation. In addition to these and other physical changes, there are psychosexual issues that many women experience as they grow older that also influence arousal and sexual desire. All of these factors combine to make female sexual wellness challenges much more complex than those of men, but not insurmountable.

Platelet Rich Plasma and Sexual Enhancement for Her

As an age-management professional, I know how important an active sex life is to optimal aging for both men and women. I also knew that I had means at my disposal, right now, to help women who came to me looking for improved sexual function.

As mentioned, the problem most often related to “FSD” in women is not so much an inability to perform, as it is in men, but a lack of desire to want to perform. For these women suffering from decreased libido, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, or BHRT is often the answer.

sexual dysfunctionFor those women for whom BHRT is not indicated, or would prefer something else, there is an all-natural alternative known as the O-shot. I have made the O-shot one of the cornerstones of my sexual wellness package for women. The O-shot uses a remarkable new technology known as Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP.

PRP was first introduced as a treatment for sport injuries or joint pain. It stimulates cellular growth and rejuvenation. Practitioners such as myself, who saw the results using PRP in healing injuries through improved blood flow, soon realized how it could be used to help with the symptoms of Female Sexual Dysfunction. This led to the creation of the O-shot.

The O-shot uses the growth factors in your own blood to improve blood flow to the vaginal area. Women report improvements in arousal, stimulation and the ability to achieve orgasms, after a single, relatively pain-free treatment.

Your body’s own growth factors, within the PRP, along with the unique combination of ingredients result in:

  • A more youthful vagina
  • Increased lubrication
  • Less painful intercourse
  • Easier, stronger, and more frequent orgasms
  • Enhanced self-confidence, self-image, and body image
  • Improved mood
  • Stress and anxiety relief

One of the first studies to investigate the effectiveness of the O-shot, or PRP Therapy for FSD, was published in a 2014 Edition of the peer-reviewed medical journal, Women’s Health Care. The researchers concluded, “Our data indicated improvement in FSD, including positive changes in isolated sexual difficulties and in the reduction of levels of sexual distress. According to the test criteria, 71% of the women improved from being “distressed” to being “not distressed” after the procedure.”

Overall the study provided undeniable clinical evidence that, “PRP injections could be an effective method to treat certain types of female sexual dysfunction, especially in the areas of desire, arousal, lubrication and orgasm.”

My thanks to the researchers for backing up the kinds of results I have been seeing with my patients for years!

The bottom line is this. When it comes to issues of female sexual wellness, no woman needs to suffer, or feel that their issues of sexual dysfunction take a backseat to those of their male counterparts.
