New Drug Approved for Treatment of Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s disease can be painful and embarrassing for men. Peyronie’s disease is characterized by a curved penis. The curvature is due to scar tissue beneath the skin.
The FDA has recently approved a prescription drug for the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. The medication is known as Xiaflex.
It is hard to determine just how common the condition is. It is probably under reported, because many men do just fine with Peyronie’s disease, while for others it results in painful erections that can make normal sexual intercourse impossible. Prior to the introduction of medications such as Xiaflex, treatment options for Peyronie’s were limited to surgery and “stretching” devices.
The curve in Peyronie’s is caused by calcified scar tissue. Xiaflex is an enzyme that can break down the collagen in the tissues. It was originally approved for the treatment of a condition of collagen build-up that causes “clawed” or permanently curved fingers. It was later approved for the treatment of Peyronie’s.
Though Xiaflex is generally well-tolerated by men with Peyronie’s disease, as with any prescription medication, Xiaflex has side-effects. The list of Xiaflex’s side effects include:
- Inflammation and swelling at the injection site
- Changes in the color of the skin of the penis
- Erectile dysfunction
- Itching in the genital area
- Painful erections and painful intercourse
What is Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s disease was named for the French physician who first documented the condition in the 1700. Peyronie’s disease is characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis.
The causes of Peyronie’s are still not 100% clear, but the most commonly held belief for the cause of Peyronie’s disease is that it occurs from repeated injury to the penis.
An Alternative Treatment for Peyronie’s Disease
Xiaflex can be effective in reducing the curve typical of Peyronie’s, but it does not completely cure the condition. Also it has not proven to be effective in all men with Peyronie’s.
Thankfully, there is a drug-free, surgery-free treatment for Peyronie’s Disease. It involves the use of Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP.
PRP is made from your own blood, so there are no known side effects. It is a concentrated formula of stem-cells and growth factors.
PRP injections have been used successfully to help men suffering from erectile dysfunction. The PRP improves blood flow to the penis, and also stimulates the renewal of erectile tissue, which improves your ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
In men with Peyronie’s Disease, PRP injections not only help cure ED, they can reduce the curvature typical of the disease.
Since PRP is made from you own blood there are little or no known side effects from PRP treatments.
PRP treatments for Peyronie’s include the P-shot, the Gains Enhancement, and the Gains Enhancement Plus. If you have Peyronie’s, why not contact our office today, and see if one of these PRP for Peyronie’s treatments is right for you.
