The diet has been proven to be effective for losing weight and preventing weight gain. It has been touted as the best by a few celebrities like Megan Fox, Matthew McConaughey and Ray Mears, and is gaining more popularity than other similar diets including Atkins diet and the Blood Group diet.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet is also called the Stone Age Diet and the Caveman’s diet, for it mimics the eating habits of our earliest ancestors from 2.5 billion years ago. Although it is also called the Hunt-gatherer Diet, the diet mainly consists of fish, organically grown meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and roots.

In simple words, the diet is based on the premise that development of agricultural methods and food processing have led to several civilization-diseases like obesity, blood pressure, arthritis and diabetes, and eating what the Paleolithic man ate is the best way to avoid them.

The diet excludes grains, legumes, refined sugar and salt, and other food products that have emerged after the development of modern agriculture.

Benefits of Paleo Diet

One of the benefits of this diet is that it encourages intake of vegetables and fruits that decrease the risk of diabetes, cancer and even cardiac disease. Also, there is no restriction in the quantity of food intake, nor does it need you to do any specific exercises. The diet is mostly high-protein as it excludes legumes and grains, and is a great option for diabetics and weight watchers.

An advantage of this diet is that it leads to weight loss due to restriction of grains. It also helps in getting rid of acne and boosts athletic performance.

Why it works

The Paleo diet works because it is more organic than most other diets. It eliminates processed foods like cakes, chips, burgers and sweetened drinks that lead to weight gain. But the main reason that this diet works is that it recommends intake of only those food that the human body was designed to process naturally.

Not only that, the ‘natural’ foods of the diet provide the body with nutrients like omega-3and other essential fatty acids, soluble fiber, antioxidants, and low GI carbs that lead to better performance of the body.

Paleo diet risks

This diet also has its set of risks. One of them is that it could create a craving for foods like pasta, potatoes, bread and sweetened drinks and snacks that are a favorite among many. Another risk is loss of nutrients by giving up grains and dairy products entirely. Also, the possibility of higher intake of meat can lead to cardio problems.

Examples of food to eat in the Paleo diet

The foods you can consider in Paleo diet include meat and foul, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and berries. Although some may say that meat and veggies should be eaten raw, that may not all be necessary to follow this diet.
