The diet promises to help you lose a lot of weight in short time. It also has celebrity followers like Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Szohr and Gisele Bundchen. The diet does have a lot of rules though, which can make it a bit hard to follow in the beginning.

What is the Dukan Diet?

The Dukan Diet is a 4-phase diet consisting mainly of high-protein. The diet is more or less like the Atkins diet, only it has no amount of carbs whatsoever in the beginning. The diet is based on the premise that lean protein can help you lose weight, and so one must begin by taking huge quantities of lean meat.

The diet is made up of four stages –

Attack – Eat as much amount of lean meat as you want in a day. Also have 1.5 tablespoons of wheat bran and 1.5 liters of water every day. Excluding lamb and pork, you can choose from over 70 varieties of lean meat in this phase.

Cruise – In this phase, you are allowed to eat unlimited quantities of non-starchy vegetables on alternate days, along with lean meats, wheat barn and water in same quantities recommended for the first phase. Veggies that cannot be eaten here include peas, corn, carrots and potatoes.

Consolidation – In this stage, the dieters are allowed to take unlimited amounts of protein, vegetables, along with one portion of bread, hard cheese and one piece of fruit low in GI.

Stabilization – This is the last stage where you need to maintain all that you have attained in the first three phases. This includes eating all you can eat for one day in a week, and follow the phase one all-protein plan for the rest of the week. Add to this a walk for 20-minutes every day, to maintain the weight you have achieved.

Another advantage is that the dieter does not have to measure or limit the food quantity as long as they stick to the list of foods recommended. Also, dieters will have to completely avoid any kind of processed foods and sugary foods, alcohol, which is a sign of healthy lifestyle.

Examples of food to eat in the Dukan Diet

Dukan diet allows you to eat protein-rich foods which include a variety of lean meats such as chicken, eggs, steak, fish, crab, lobster, turkey; non-fat cottage cheese, Greek yoghurt (non-fat); and vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, aubergine, broccoli, radish, tomatoes, leek, cucumber, celery and beans.
