Everyone knows that excessive amounts of alcohol aren’t good for you. It’s especially not good for your weight; it’s called a “beer belly” for a reason. Fortunately, there are ways to still enjoy your favorite drink without it impacting your waistline too much. Try these tips to stick to your healthy eating plan and still make it to happy hour.

Avoid Sugary Drinks: To enjoy alcohol responsibly and healthily, avoid all of the frozen and sugary drinks that are full of empty calories. Some of the most common culprits include pina coladas, daiquiris and anything with a soft drink mixer.

Try Natural Juice Mixes: The rule of thumb is to avoid mixes that use sodas or other sugary drinks, but if you absolutely need a sweet fix, splash your drinks with a little bit of natural fruit juice to get some sweet flavor in there without the excessive amount of sugar.

Choose “Light” Options: There are numerous light options available when it comes to beers and cocktails. Opting for these alternatives can save you hundreds of calories in certain cases. Light beers in particular are low in carbs, so try these when you’re out and about.

Don’t Overdo It: Moderation is key when it comes to drinking.  Always try to limit your consumption; avoid drinking more than a couple of beers or a glass or two of wine at a time. Drinking too much can lead to lowered inhibitions and a big appetite – not a good combination when you’re on a diet. Oh, and did we mention the nasty hangover?
