Hormone Replacement Therapy For Women
"How can Hormone Therapy help?" In this day and age it is quite normal for a woman to balance a career with being a mother, a wife and running a home. As a result of these responsibilities, it’s easy to forget about your own good health and general well being.
For most women, being well informed about health and wellness is becoming increasingly important. It’s common knowledge that women are far better at visiting their doctors than men and in general, take better care of themselves. However, when it comes to a hormone imbalance or deficiency and preparing for menopause, many women don’t know where to begin. They just know that they are beginning to gain excessive weight, experience hot flashes, bouts of insomnia, loss of sexual desire, anxiety, drier skin and hair.
If you believe your health is being impacted by a hormone deficiency, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy may be an excellent option for you. Read more about menopause, the symptoms of low hormone levels in women and hormone replacement treatment options below. Or fill out the form for your FREE guide to Hormone Therapy.

As a woman, you are biologically different from a man in many respects. You have female hormones that can protect you from some diseases yet put you at risk from others. You are vulnerable to osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancer along with many other conditions.
You also have to consider the impact of pregnancy on your body. You have to face menopause, losing your figure, thinning hair, dry and aging skin, loss of libido and vaginal dryness. Good women’s health is not just about looking good and performing to the best of your abilities, it’s also about being informed on what’s out there that could benefit you, your health and quality of life. Hormone therapy with bio-identical hormones treats pre-menopausal and menopausal symptoms and can also enhance a women's long-term health and quality of life.
Menopause Symptoms
As women age, certain hormones like estrogen, progesterone, HGH – human growth hormone - thyroid hormones and even testosterone decline. This decline causes a hormonal imbalance that can trigger sexual, mental and physical problems. As menopause approaches, the ovaries start to slow the production of hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. A woman's hormone levels and subsequent hormonal symptoms can fluctuate for years before becoming so low that menstruation ceases completely.
Women in their mid-thirties and forties can suffer from Pre-Menopause and women in their fifties and beyond can suffer from Menopause. Many of these symptoms can be debilitating if not properly treated. Many physicians misdiagnose hormone deficiency related symptoms or lack sufficient experience with hormone replacement treatment programs to find appropriate solutions tailored to each patient.
Symptoms of Pre-Menopause / Menopause include:
Irregular menstrual cycle length
Increased breast tenderness
Irritability and mood swings
Water retention, bloating
Weight gain, muscle loss
Increased inability to cope
Poor concentration, focus
Reduced libido / sex drive
Headaches and dizziness
Anxiety and tearfulness
Hot flashes and insomnia
Night sweats and chills
Extreme fatigue and depression
Foggy thinking and confusion
Dry or wrinkling skin and hair loss
Vaginal dryness, discomfort and itching
Excessive urination, burning or stinging
Exercise and diet resistant increase in fat
Social withrawal, shyness and panic attacks
Traditionally, women suffering from the above hormone-related symptoms have been prescribed the contraceptive pill to “regulate periods”, or anti-depressants to “settle-down” or benzodiazepines like valium to “calm down”. This approach does not get to the root of the problem - hormone deficiency or hormonal imbalance.
Age management for women. In many cases, a simple age management treatment, combining exercise, diet, nutritional supplements, hormone boosting supplements and prescription Bio-Identical Hormone medications - if medically indicated, can even improve or reverse many of the health issues and menopausal symptoms that aging women suffer from due to declining hormone levels.
AAG Health’s focus is to naturally optimize your hormones so you can treat and overcome your menopausal symptoms in a safe and effective manner. We can help improve your health, performance, sex drive and appearance enabling you to get back on track and feeling rejuvenated. Call 1-800-325-1325 or fill out our hormone therapy help form. HRT: Bio-identical vs. Synthetic Hormones
Much has been said about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) including natural hormone therapies for women recently, especially in the news. The debate still rages over treatment of menopause with synthetic pharmaceutical hormones versus hormone replacement with natural Bio-Identical hormones. Suzanne Somers claims in her many books that Bio-Identical hormone therapy (BHRT) has had life changing effects and has resurrected her career. Even Oprah Winfrey has touched on the subject of natural hormone replacement for women and the benefits of bio-identical hormones. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women
Bio-Identical (natural plant-derived) hormones are formulated to have the same molecular structure as the hormones made by your own body unlike synthetic chemical hormones. Synthetic hormones are chemically altered and intentionally different from bio-identical or natural hormone compounds. Big pharmaceutical companies can't patent a bio-identical structure, so they invented synthetic hormones many of which are horse-derived hormone drugs that were patentable like Premarin™, Prempro™ and Provera™. These synthetic hormones are not bio-identical, have been reported to create many adverse health problems including heart disease and stroke, and to have side effects that can be more troublesome than the menopausal symptoms they were designed to alleviate.
Bio-Identical Hormones and AAG Health. At AAG Health, our physicians listen to you so they can tailor a hormone therapy program to your individual needs. In addition to estrogen and progesterone replacement, many women can also benefit from Testosterone, DHEA, HGH, Oxytocin and HCG therapy. In women, Testosterone the "hormone of sexual desire" is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Research shows that the hormone testosterone can effectively boost sex drive in women, increase arousal, reduce vaginal dryness, as well as remedy other sexual problems caused by low libido and women experiencing symptoms of sexual dysfunction. Always see a physician before taking any kind of hormone supplement or medication. Learn more about our individualized Bio-Identical treatment programs below.
Individualized Hormone Replacement. Our hormone treatment physicians use only the highest quality Bio-Identical Hormones and customize a hormone replacement program to your individual needs. The synthetic versions used by many other health or anti-aging clinics are the standard kinds of hormone replacement therapy typically used by physicians who are unaware of the benefits of natural, bio-identical hormone therapy. Their hormone treatment programs are generally a "one-size-fits-all" dosage regime. The hormone customization and personal attention you will receive from an AAG physician - is where AAG Health is different!
Explore Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy or BHRT
Though Bio-Identical hormones have been around for years, most health care practitioners, gynecologists, urologists and even some endocrinologists are unfamiliar with them. Bioidentical hormones for menopausal therapy come in a variety of types, formulations and delivery methods.
1) Pills, Supplements and Sublingual 2) Gel, Creams, Patches and Pellets 3) Injectable Hormone Medications
BIO-IDENTICAL ESTROGEN
Bioidentical Estrogens are compounded estrogen formulations for menopause that contain estradiol, estrone and/or estriol. Hormone replacement medication products such as Bi-Est (biestrogen) contain 20% estradiol and 80% estriol; Triest (triestrogen) contains 10% estradiol, 10% estrone and 80% estriol. These are individually formulated and prepared for patients. Bi-Est, available in capsules, sublingual compounds, a transdermal cream or gel is a very popular hormone preparation used for bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT). Estrogen should always be taken with its hormonal counterpart progesterone to maintain the delicate hormonal balance as nature designed.
BIO-IDENTICAL PROGESTERONE
Progesterone is produced by the ovaries and the adrenal glands in women. One of the most important functions of progesterone is in the female reproductive cycle where high progesterone levels causes an increase in libido and lines the vagina and uterus with a protective lining as a women approaches menstruation. Progesterone also plays an important role in brain function and is known as the "feel good hormone" because of its mood enhancing and anti-depressant effects. Progesterone works with estrogen to keep bones healthy and strong, and prevents estrogen dominance that can cause irregular or heavy periods, weight gain, loss of sex drive, hot flashes, water retention, headaches, moodiness, anxiety and other meno-pause like symptoms. It is highly recommended to always use progesterone together with your estrogen therapy and at the smallest dose required to normalize your hormonal balance.
Optimum hormone levels of progesterone can foster feelings of calmness and well-being as well as alleviate bouts of depression, a common hormone related symptom. Deficient or below normal levels of progesterone can mean uncontrollable feelings of anxiety, moodiness, irritability, bursts of anger and loss of libido. The loss of progesterone can result in unexpected mood swings, little sexual desire and because progesterone helps control a women's body temperature, low progesterone levels can cause the body's temperature to drop and result in hot flashes and night sweats. The proper progesterone to estrodial balance in a women's sytem contributes to normal body function and sex drive.
Progesterone / Estrodial Imbalance. An imbalance of Pg to E2, with estradiol (estrogen) too high and/or progesterone too low - can cause health problems, menstrual irregularity, breast tenderness, fluid retention, bloating, weight gain, migraines, cramping, lowered sex drive, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, moodiness, confusion, muscle, back and joint pain. Many symptoms and body changes leading up to menopause are associated with the decreased production of progesterone. The use of progesterone therapy, 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off - will often keep a women's normal menstrual cycle going. Many times, hormonal testing in peri-menopausal women with irregular periods shows an estrogen dominant state. Conversely, with an estrogen deficiency and progesterone too high, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, breast swelling, fatigue, dizziness, depression, lethargy, dry skin, memory problems, osteoporosis and loss of libido result.
Progesterone is intrumental to a women's sexual health, menstruation, pregnancy, mood, emotions, bone health, fat metabolism, collagen synthesis and blood clotting and has a profound effect on the brain, breasts, heart, liver, ovaries, uterus and vagina. Progesterone replacement therapy is comprised of pill and/or cream hormone delivery methods. Progesterone calms the nerves and taking progesterone at night before bedtime can help women who are having trouble sleeping or experiencing insomnia. Bio-identical or natural progesterone hormone replacement like Prometrium, an oral bio-identical progesterone or creams and gels containing wild yam (a plant-derived progesterone like substance) - are superior to synthetic hormones with regards to health and side effects.
BIO-IDENTICAL TESTOSTERONE
Testosterone is known as the "hormone of desire" and although testosterone is considered primarily a male sex hormone, women also produce testosterone in small amounts. Testosterone plays a very important role in the overall health and well-being of both sexes. Testosterone has a powerful effect on a women's libido and mood, and is also important in building muscle, bone and ligaments. Testosterone therapy increases energy, libido and lowers depression. Testosterone deficiency in women can cause a loss of sexual desire and vaginal sensitivity, extreme fatigue, irritability, depression, joint pain, dry skin conditions, muscle loss and osteoporosis.
Testosterone must be dosed properly in women to be effective without causing any unwanted side effects. The dose in women is generally 1/10 to 1/30 of that used for men and an experienced hormone doctor can monitor proper testosterone dosage levels. Testosterone replacement is usually prescribed as a topical cream or gel but injections can also be highly effective for women as they are for men. For increased sexual desire and to restore the ability to have orgasms, DHEA and Oxytocin are sometimes prescibed along with testosterone for women. Oxytocin is responsible for the "high" experienced during orgasm in both men and women.
Testosterone replacement therapy usually is prescribed only for women who have sufficient estrogen levels. The estradiol-testosterone combination patch called Estratest® provides appropropriate estrogen/testosterone dosages for women, but is not a natural, bio-identical testosterone formulation. A bio-identical testosterone can only be prescribed by your physician from a bio-identical compounding pharmacy and provided as a tablet/capsule, sublingual, creams/lotion or gel.
Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is the medical term for women who experience:
- a loss of sexual desire
- a lack of arousal
- low libido
Testosterone Replacement can be instrumental in restoring a women's sexual health and enjoyment. Talk to your AAG Health Hormone Physician for more information.
BIO-IDENTICAL HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE - HGH
HGH - Human Growth hormone is known as "the master hormone" or "longevity hormone". Like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, Pregnenolone, Oxytocin, melatonin and others, growth hormone declines with age. HGH replacement works to significantly alleviate and reverse a diverse range of the hormone-related symptoms associated with the process of aging. The decline of growth hormone with age is directly associated with many of the symptoms of aging, including loss of strength and energy, loss of sexual desire and libido, skin dryness and wrinkling, hair loss and graying, loss of muscle an bone density, uncontrollable weight gain and increased body fat, cardiovascular and heart disease, osteoporosis and an overall lower life expectancy.
There is clinical evidence that demonstrates that by replacing human growth hormone women can manage and even reverse many menopausal symptoms and hormone deficency related diseases. Many health conditions associated with aging are due to the decline of HGH levels in a women's body. In order to increase HGH levels in the body, prescription injectable HGH is administered. These growth hormones injections are very effective and there are also other natural HGH boosting supplements that have been used to increase growth hormone levels by stimulating the body’s own production of HGH.
BIO-IDENTICAL PREGNENOLONE
Pregnenolone is a superhormone that keeps our brains functioning and is known as the "memory enhancing hormone". Pregnenolone also heightens a sense of well-being and elevates one's mood, improves focus and concentration, fights mental fatigue, improving memory and clarity, relieves joint pain and arthritis. Pregnenolone is synthesized from cholesterol and what is not utilized by the body is turned into DHEA which is broken down into estrogen and testosterone. Since pregnenolone "gives birth" to the other hormones, it is known as the super or parent hormone.
BIO-IDENTICAL DHEA
DHEA - Dehydroepiandrosterone is the most abundant hormone in the human body. Like HGH, a drop in DHEA levels correlates significantly with the signs and "symptoms" associated with the aging process. DHEA protects against heart and cardivascular disease by lowering blood cholesterol and preventing blood clots. Clinical studies also demonstrate that DHEA improves orgasmic ability, memory, strengthens the immuno system, helps prevent bone loss, fight fatigue and depression, enhances feelings of well-being and increases body strength. DHEA alleviates symptoms of menopause in women, reduces body fat, enhances sexual desire and libido.

Sweats & Chills. Night sweats, hot flashes, hot flushes and chills. At night especially, such hormonal symptoms can produce an almost intolerable feeling of heat that is often accompanied by profuse sweating. Having to constantly throw off the bed sheets, turn up the AC or open the windows - and then when the chills come, search for the covers again and bundle up, directly disturbs sleep and is absolutely exhausting for most women. Relationships tend to suffer because when night sweats and chills are at their worst, you do not feel sexy or want to absorb even more body heat from your partner. Hot flushes are many times accompanied by an increased pulse rate and heart palpitations. Hot flushes are most often followed by a cold chill but not always. Hot flashes and chills sometimes subside on there own without treatment, other times intervention with hormone treatment is required.
Vaginal Dryness & Discomfort. An estrogen deficiency can bring about vaginal dryness and thinning of the vaginal lining. The lack of vaginal lubrication and support for the vaginal walls reduces sexual arousal and increases discomfort and friction during sex. The consequent vaginal soreness, burning or irritation make sexual intercourse or achieving orgasm difficult and many women shy away from sexual relations or being intimate with a partner due to hormonal symptoms.
Menstruation Irregularity. Irregular periods and variation in duration are commonplace in women experiencing pre-menopause symptoms. Excess urination and urinary incontinence are also symptoms of a hormonal imbalance. Another symptom most women experience is unusually dry skin and lips, changes in the shape of their breasts and uncontrollable weight gain especially around waistline and hips.
Sex Drive, Sexual Dysfunction and Depression. Loss of libido and loss of desire to be intimate is a sign that a women is entering pre-menopause and many women complain that they simply lose their desire for sex. Low progesterone and testosterone levels can cause depression, severe moodiness and insomnia - these symptoms are some of the very first signs women experience as they enter menopause. An important use of female hormone replacement therapy is to assist with loss of libido and alleviate vaginal dryness that prevents intimacy. In addition to regular hormone replacement methods, many women apply hormone creams to the vagina to alleviate vaginal dryness, discomfort, itchiness or soreness. Although, ordinary lubricants can be somewat helpful for making intercourse more comfortable and satisfying but many pre-menopausal and menopausal women find a prescription hormone preparation necessary.

Important Hormone Test & Therapy Notes for Peri-Menopausal & Menopausal Women
Pre-Menopausal and Menopausal women should get their hormones tested at a qualified hormone center or age management clinic. As women age and enter menopause their hormones begin to decline. This homonal decline can actually begin to take place up to 15 years prior to actual menopause - so frequent hormonal testing should be undertaken so the physician will more easily be able to ascertain a women's hormonal baseline. Low levels of progesterone, the estrogens - estriol and estradiol, thyroid, DHEA, human growth hormone, HGH and others experienced in women going through either perimenopause or menopause can cause a the wide range of "menopausal" symptoms. As the delicate balance in a women's hormones that dictated her monthly cycle is disturbed - a women will suffer some or all of the following to some degree - hot flashes, night sweats and chills, mood swings, irritability, loss of sex drive, low libido, vaginal dryness, weight gain, muscle loss, bone loss, depression, memory loss, dizziness, headaches, bloating (water retention), insomnia or difficulty sleeping. In addition to these symptoms, menopause related hormonal imbalance increases a woman’s risk of serious health conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes, thyroid, immuno and cardiovascular disease. Through frequent hormone panel testing that provides a baseline hormone profile with the varying hormone levels, the hormone doctor who is an expert in age management and anti-aging medicine, as well as highly trained in natural hormone replacement therapies and bioidentical hormones - can help women restore their optimal hormonal balance using natural hormone replacement therapy.
