Testosterone Pellets
Learn about new Testosterone Pellet implant procedures for Testosterone Replacement.
"Testosterone Pellet Implants are another effective method of Hormone Therapy."
Testosterone pellets are a new way to deliver testosterone for those with a testosterone deficiency due to andropause (male menopause) or menopause. Testosterone pellets are fast becoming one of the many convenient forms of testosterone hormone therapy. This long-acting testosterone treatment is attractive to many patients who find it difficult to remain compliant with their hormone medication schedule.
"With Testosterone Pellets there are no more weekly injections required, no gels or creams that take time to absorb or can be transferred to others, no schedule or dosing instructions to remember, no testosterone patch to hide, and because testosterone pellets last for 4 to 6 month's, hormone therapy is more evenly spread over time."
Testosterone pellets are used to treat testosterone deficiencies in
men and women whose bodies are unable to create sufficient amounts of testosterone. The pellets are inserted in an out-patient procedure by a licensed
physician and slowly release testosterone in a steady fashion for about 4 to 6 months.
Testosterone Pellets are normally marketed under the brand
name Testopel® and other testosterone pellet hormone medication brands. Testopel®
and other similar testosterone replacement methods use a
form of hormone pellet that require a doctor's prescription. Read more below about how testosterone therapy pellets are implanted. For more information, you are welcome to fill out our quick info form or to contact an AAG Health hormone replacement specialist at 1-800-325-1325.
How
Testosterone Pellets are Administered / Pellet Insertion
Testosterone Pellets are about the
size of a grain of rice and can be inserted during a relatively quick outpatient procedure
in your hormone physician's office. It usually takes around twenty minutes and is
virtually pain free with localized anesthetic. The doctor will first numb the area with the local anesthetic and then insert the pellets through your skin and into the fatty tissue in your buttocks. The
number of testosterone pellets to be inserted with each treatment is determined
by your physician according to the medically indicated dosage of testosterone you need after you have had a comprehensive medical evaluation and hormone blood test.
Bio-Identical Testosterone Replacement
Testosterone Pellets are a type of
hormone replacement therapy that uses natural or
"bio-identical" testosterone for replacement. As with many testosterone therapies for men with an androgen deficiency, Arimidex / Anastrazol
or other aromatase inhibiter to block the excess of estrogen may be prescribed. HCG or other testosterone boosters may also be
clinically indicated. Your hormone specialist will discuss your hormone therapy program options with you. Should you have any additional questions, call AAG Health at 1-800-325-1325.
Testosterone
Hormone Pellet Dosing Range
The medically indicated dose of
testosterone pellets can range from 150-650 mg which equals two to eight
pellets, however up to 10 or 12 may be medically indicated for proper testosterone
replacement and hormone optimization depending on your normal or optimal testosterone level. Testosterone Hormone Pellets are the size of a large grain of rice and usually 6-8 pellets are inserted for men and 1-2 pellets for women.
How
Testosterone Pellets Work in Your System
Testosterone Pellets work in a
similar way to "time-released" vitamin supplements in that they release a
constant supply of testosterone into your body which can last for up to five or
six months. After a period of time, if you feel testosteone hormonal deficiency symptoms recurring, your physician will check your
testosterone levels in order to determine when it is time to implant more
pellets or adjust your testosterone dosage.
Benefits
and Risks of Testosterone Pellets
There are a number of advantages to
pellets as a testosterone therapy as follows:
- Convenience: Testosterone Pellets can be a very convenient method of hormone delivery.
- Even Flow of Hormone: Testosterone Pellets are effective at releasing an even flow of tetsosterone to your body in order to better avoid wide swings of
testosterone in your system. *
- Long Duration Between Application: You don't have to apply gels or testosterone creams every day or visit the doctor once a week for shots. Testosterone
Pellets can last on average bewteen 3 to 6 months.
- Direct Delivery to Your System: Unlike pills which may cause harm to your liver and must pass through the digestive track, the testosterone pellet hormone
medication is delivered directly and in a steady manner keeping testosterone
levels consistent in your blood.
* Avoiding possible erratic swings in testosterone levels and dosage protocols that may
occur with other forms of delivery is one of the biggest advantages of pellets.
Testosterone pellets require a minor surgical procedure. As with all medical
procedures there are some risks. The risks of testosterone pellets are
associated with the method of subcutaneous injection and appropriate insertion
protocol administered by a licensed physician should always be followed. Pellets
can also make it more difficult to customize and adjust dosages so your hormone
physician may initially prescribe testosterone injections, creams or gel to
establish your optimal testosterone replacement level.
Testosterone Pellet Side Effects & Risks
As with all testosterone replacement treatments, there is a risk of testosterone side effects associated with pellets. In addition, an infection, pain or inflammation may develop at the injection site if surgical and post surgical care protocol is not properly followed. Testosterone pellet implantation can have less flexibility for dosage adjustment than testosterone creams, testosterone gels, oral administration or intramuscular testosterone injections. Testosterone pellets require surgical removal if testosterone therapy should be discontinued before the treatment has run its natural course. Certain health conditions would contraindict the use of Testosterone Pellets.

Testosterone Pellets Q & A
What is the main benefit of Testosterone Pellets?
Less Frequent Dosing. Tesosterone pellets are usually implanted
every 3 to 4 months but can also last up to 5 or 6 months. Other than required follow-up testing, once the insertion surgical procedure takes place you can forget about them for several months unless inflammation or other reaction occurs. Men usually require 6 to 12 pellets and women 1 or 2 depending on the medical evaluation and testosterone hormone blood test results. A follow-up blood test at the 3rd or 4th month into the therapy will ascertain your testosterone levels, and your physician will decide if the number of testosterone pellets needs to be adjusted.
How do pellets optimize my Testosterone?
Sustained Testosterone Dosing. Unlike some other testoserone delivery methods, pellets release a smaller amount of Testosterone hormone into your blood stream
which attempts to better mimic your body's own Testosterone production. This can help eliminate the erratic
swings in Testosterone levels that can come along with other types of testosterone
treatment and hormone therapy. Since implanted testosterone pellets are
absorbed slowly, they provide a constant and consistent level of hormones
into your blood stream helping you avoid the peaks and valleys found with
traditional delivery methods reducing the re-occurrence of low t symptoms and other side effects.
Who can use testosterone pellet implants?
The same patients that need
testosterone in other forms but wish to try the testosterone pellet
implant.
Is fasting required before the procedure?
No, fasting is not required before or after the testosterone pellet implant procedure.
What is the recovery time?
You can return to normal activities and work right after the
procedure. There is no down time although exercise is not advised until two to three days
after the procedure. You will be able to sit without problems and although there may be some tenderness for a couple of days after the procedure, the testosterone pellets are implanted on
the upper side of the buttocks where there is little sitting pressure.
What is the implant frequency?
Every 4 to 6 months based upon follow up testing, patient feedback regarding treatment and symptoms.
Will I feel the pellets under the skin?
Most of the time, you will not feel anything under the skin.
Is testosterone the only hormone that can be replaced using pellets?
No, other hormones can be replaced using this convenient insertion method like DHEA, estradiol/estrogen pellet implants.
What are some of the risks of Testosterone Pellets?
- Minor surgery is required to implant the testosterone pellets
- There may be some minor pain or bruising a day or two after implantation
- If not inserted properly, the implants can resurface and need to be re-implanted
- If wound care is procedure is not followed, infection of the incision site can occur
- Medical precautions exist regarding drug interactions with oral
anticoagulants, oxyphenbutazone, and insulin - testosterone pellets are not for everyone and should only be considered after a comprehensive medical history and medical evaluation has taken place.
- Some adverse reactions could include inflammation and pain at the site of subcutaneous implantation.
How is a Testosterone Pellet Implanted?
The implant procedure consists of a number of steps that are performed in about a 15 to 20 minute out-patient procedure with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine at your hormone doctor's office.
1) The insertion area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with alcohol and prepped with betadine.
2) A surgical drape is placed over the pellet area to ensure a clean, sterile operating area and a local anesthetic is given to numb the area.
3) A small incision is made in the buttocks or hip area through which a narrow cannula tube or trocar is inserted.
4) The pellets are inserted through the cannula into the fatty tissue in either a line or a "fan", then the cannula is withdrawn.
5) The incision is then closed with a sterile strip and pressure applied
until any bleeding stops. The area is then covered with a dressing.
6) Wound care instructions are provided to the patient to prevent infection.
Testosterone therapy in general is normally accompanied by
estrogen blocker hormone medications called aromatase inhibitors (AI's)
like Arimidex (Anastrozole) or Femara (Letrozole). Testoserone pellets require a
licensed physician's prescription and may be considered for treating
andropausal symptoms, hypogonadism and menopause symptoms. Pellets are a form of testosterone replacement therapy that uses implantable testosterone pellets as a viable alternative to other treatments for hypogonadism. Testosterone Pellets are for androgen deficient patients who qualify for low testosterone therapy and are
not considered to be safe or effective for the enhancement of athletic
performance.
