Testosterone

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a potent sex hormone produced primarily by the testes and is responsible for male characteristics, increased muscle mass, high bone density, facial and body hair growth. Women also produce testosterone but the male body produces about ten times more than an adult female. Testosterone is the "hormone of desire" and contributes directly to sexual health in both men and women.

Testosterone is essential for a man's health and well being and when the body’s production of testosterone slows down in the early to mid 30’s, hormone-related health signs begin to appear. The first signs of a reduced testosterone level generally noticed by a man is his reduced activity level, reduced muscle mass, inability to sleep, loss of sexual interest, softer erections or decreased ability to have or maintain an erection - erectile dysfunction.

Normal Testosterone Levels. When testosterone levels are normal, men experience general good health, lean muscle, satisfying sex, a normal sex drive, healthy ambition, good sleep, brain function and memory. Healthy testosterone levels are also known to reduce depression, increase cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of high blood pressure and heart attacks.

Normal levels of testosterone change as you age but a simple series of health questions can help you to determine if you are at risk for low testosterone and need to increase testosterone levels through hormone therapy.

A short doctor visit and simple blood test will determine if you have Low T or an androgen deficiency. Low Testosterone can be safely, affordably managed through a physician-supervised testosterone replacement program using testosterone injections, creams, gels, patches or pellets.

Take the low testosterone survey to see if you are experiencing the symptoms of andropause.

Testosterone, Low T and Hormone Testing

A low testosterone test checks the level of the male hormone (androgen) in the blood. Testosterone affects sexual features and development. In men, it is made in large amounts by the testicles. In both men and women, testosterone is made in small amounts by the adrenal glands and, in women, by the ovaries.

The pituitary gland controls the level of testosterone in the body. When the testosterone level is low, the pituitary gland releases a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH). LH hormone tells the testicles to make more testosterone as required by the body. Pituitary gland health and fuction is essential for normal levels of testosterone to be produced

Before puberty, the male child's testosterone level is normally low. Testosterone increases during puberty and causes boys to develop a deeper voice, get bigger muscles, produce sperm, and grow facial and body hair. The level of testosterone is the highest around age 25 to 30 years of age, then gradually becomes less in older men declinig at a rate of approxiamtely 1% to 2% per year.

In women, the ovaries account for half of the testosterone in the body. Women have a much smaller amount of testosterone in their bodies than men, almost 10 times less. But testosterone plays an important role throughout the women's body.

In both men and women testosterone affects brain function including memory, bone density and muscle mass, fat distribution, the cardiovascular system, energy levels, genitals and healthy sexual function including sexual desire.

Most of the testosterone in the blood is bound to a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG). Testosterone that is not bound is known as "bio-available' or "free testosterone". The level of Free T can be checked if a man or a woman is experiencing symptoms due to andropause (male menopause) or menopaue or is having sexual problems like loss of libido, decreased sexual desire, and erectile dysfunction, (ED) in men; (FSD) in women.

Why are Low Testosterone Tests Performed

  • Fertility: determine why a man is having problems in fathering a child or may be infertile. Low testosterone can lead to low sperm counts and unhealthy sperm.
  • Low Sex Drive: determine why a man is experinecing sexual problems. Low levels of testosterone can lower a man's sex drive.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: low testosterone can cause soft erections, inability to maintain an erection or not allow him to have an erection; impotence.
  • Determine the reasond for decreased sex drive in a woman or other symptoms of FSD (Female Sexual Dysfunction). FSD can be caused by low levels of testosterone in a women's body.
  • Determine why a woman is developing male characteristics, such as excessive facial and body hair and a deep voice.
  • Find out why a woman is having irregular menstrual periods.
  • Determine the cause of bone loss or osteoporosis in a man.

Normal Testosterone Levels

The normal values listed below are called a testosterone reference range and are used to see if further testing or hormone treatment may be required. The normal testosterone ranges vary from lab to lab - and your lab report should contain the normal range your particular lab uses. Also, your hormone doctor will evaluate your lab's blood test results based on your medical history, current health and other health factors. A low t level for one individual could be considered high for another. And remember when it comes to testosterone levels, it is the "bio-available" testosterone or "FREE T" level that is important in determining whether a person has low testosterone, not the TOTAL testoserone.

Normal Total Testosterone Ranges

Men

270-1070 ng/dL (9-38 nmol/L

Women

15-70 ng/dL (0.52-2.4 nmol/L)

Children

2-20 ng/dL or 0.07-0.7 nmol/L

Importance of Testosterone Testing. Assessing your normal testosterone levels with a hormone blood test will give your hormone replacement physician a testosterone level baseline upon which to base prospective testosterone replacement therapy. Determining the normal testosterone levels including total testosterone and free testosterone helps the doctor prepare a successful testosterone treatment program individualized to your specific needs and symptoms. Testosterone levels are used as a measurement to compare your current levels of testosterone to testosterone levels during a hormone replacment therapy program to see if hormone medication and dosage needs adjustment.

When testosterone levels are increased to within normal levles with testosterone replacement treatment, your sex drive, energy, strength, muscle and bone mass, ability to sleep, attitude, drive and enthusiasm for life will increase. If you are suffering from andropausal symptoms, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction / ED or impotence due to a testosterone hormone defciency, bio-identical testosterone injections, testosterone creams or gels, patches and other testosterone boosters can help alleviate your symptoms.
