Vitamins and Supplements

For one, people don’t have the time to prepare nutrient rich food, or eat selectively, to get their daily dose of vitamins. Lack of essential vitamins is one of the main causes of ill-health today, and the importance of vitamin supplementation for staying healthy and energized cannot be stressed enough.

Why vitamin supplementation is important

Vitamins are essential nutrients that you need to stay healthy. This is the age of fast food, and what we eat hardly gives us the required nutrients. Added to that, even the vegetables and the meat that we eat are not processed organically; this leads to loss of nutrients in them. The gap that our daily food intake leaves in providing the essential nutrients can be filled by vitamin supplementation.

Vitamin supplementation is a must as they are essential for development of the immune system, the nervous system and for the overall growth of the person. They play a key role in making your bodily functions possible, and act as enzymes that help in the chemical reactions in your body.

What are the major vitamins adults should take?

Adults need more nutrition when compared to kids. While a grown person uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins, he or she cannot survive without the essential minerals and vitamins. Vitamins not only help in development of a person, but also in keeping disease at bay.

Among the major vitamins that an adult should take include:

Vitamin C – Vitamin C can be water-soluble or fat soluble. As a water-soluble nutrient, vitamin C is extremely useful in helping you build skin tissues (produce collagen), bones and ligaments. It plays an important role in helping the body repair itself, and supports the immune system. Not just that, it also plays a vital role in producing neurotransmitters, which are essential for functioning of the brain. Adult men should consume approximately 90mg of Vitamin C every day, while women should take 75mg.

Vitamin B – B-Complex is one of the most important nutrients that an adult needs. In fact, of the 8 B vitamins, 5 water soluble nutrients are necessary for breaking up of the food we take and convert it into energy. The five vitamins are – thiamin (men: 1.2 mg, women: 1.1 mg), pantothenic acid (5 mg for both), riboflavin (men: 1.3 mg, women: 1.1 mg), biotin (30 mg for both), and niacin (men: 16 mg, women: 14 mg). We also need 1.3 mg of vitamin B6, and 2.4 mg of B-12, which play a major role in formation of red blood cells.

Fat-soluble vitamins – Vitamin A, K, E and D are fat soluble vitamins, as the body absorbs them and stores excess of these vitamins in liver and fat tissues. Men need 900 mg of Vitamin A, and 120 mg of Vitamin K, while women need 700mg of vitamin a and 90 mg of vitamin K. The necessary intake of Vitamin E should be 15 mg each day and Vitamin D should be 5 mg, for both men and women.

Does vitamin supplementation work?
More than 50% of Americans take vitamin and dietary supplements, despite the fact that research has not concluded that they make a significant impact on your health. Whether or not a particular supplement works depends on what its ingredients are and whether or not you need them. Before you go ahead and fill your shopping cart with supplement bottles, be sure to consult a medical professional.
