Common Hair Loss and Prostate Drugs can Cause ED
It’s not uncommon in medicine to see “the cure” be worse than “the disease”. In this case, some common medications used by men, could be causing erectile dysfunction, or ED.
A study recently published in the medical journal, Endocrine Reviews and Metabolic Disorders, focuses on men who may may “experience more adverse effects than benefits”, when taking certain drugs. They found that 25% of men taking Finasteride or Dutasteride (more commonly known as Procepia), for benign prostate enlargement (BPH), or for male pattern baldness, experienced side effects like ED.
The study was conducted by the Boston University Medical Center. They concluded, “these types of drugs can have serious implications for sexual function, insulin resistance, cognitive function, and depression.”
These Drugs Can Lower Testosterone
These drugs are designed to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT. DHT is basically how a man’s body uses testosterone. Excessive amounts of DHT can lead to hair loss. Decreasing the levels of DHT in the prostate have also been shown to temporarily shrink the prostate and improve urine flow.
That is why these drugs have been prescribed to treat both male pattern baldness and prostate enlargement. However, more and more studies are coming to light that they probably do more harm than good. Especially when it comes to sexual wellness.
In fact Procepia now carries a warning that 10% of users will experience loss of libido, and 18% “persistent” ED.
The Boston University researchers also found that the manufacturers’ claims about the effects were false. Normal sexual function did not always return after 6 months.
In fact, they discovered that patients on Finasteride still experienced issues with their ED after the 6 month mark. Many also experienced significant decreases in testosterone “causing hypogonadism.”
Effective Treatments for ED
For men who are experiencing problems with ED and are using these drugs for baldness or prostate enlargement, discontinuing the medication does usually solve the problem. However, if you cannot discontinue the medication or if the ED is caused by some entirely different reason, there is also help available.
There are a number of prescription ED medications that you are probably familiar with such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. These ED drugs can be effective, but they are not right for all men.
Men with diabetes and/or high blood pressure should not take these drugs. Unfortunately, those are the very men who are most likely to be dealing with ED!
