Why bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

Every day, millions of women suffer from uncomfortable, disabling symptoms associated with the hormonal imbalance of pre-menopause and menopause. This hormone imbalance may be causing you to feel depressed, anxious, fatigued, sexless, generally ill…or just feeling under the weather.

Many women don’t have access to the health care needed to get better and thrive. This is where Doctors who specialize in age management bio-identical hormone treatments can help you. By offering hormone medications (when clinically needed) with good advice on diet, nutritional supplements and exercise, women get back to feeling “right”.

Types of bio-identical hormone medications

The most common types of bio-identical hormones that women are prescribed are the three different types of estrogen (estrone, estradiol and estriol), progesterone, testosterone and HGH (although there is some debate as to whether HGH is bio-identical). These can all be bundled together in creams and pills according to what’s convenient for the patient and the dose.

Bio-identical estrogen and progesterone. Both these hormones are micronized (finely ground for better absorption). Both should be made at a compounding pharmacy and are available only with a prescription. Bio-identical estrogen comes in pill, patch, cream, and various vaginal topical preparations (creams, rings and gels). Progesterone comes in a capsule form or as a cream for topical application.

Bio-identical estradiol in pill form is converted in the liver to estrone, the weaker bio-identical estrogen. Estrogen in a patch enters the bloodstream as bio-identical estradiol. HRT creams, gels, and lotions can also deliver bio-identical estradiol directly to the bloodstream.

There are many “combination” preparations available. Formulations that contain Bi-est & Tri-est for example are very common and the ratios and doses can be tweaked according to a woman’s specific needs.

1) Bi-est is available as oral capsules, sublingual compounds, transdermal cream / gel, vaginal cream
2) Tri-est comes in oral capsules or transdermal gel / cream
3) Tri-est or bi-est and progesterone is a cream only combination

Testosterone. Many women benefit from low dose testosterone therapy. Bio-identical testosterone can work well to improve libido, mood and energy in women who take it. Bio-identical preparations are available in cream, troche and pill form. Injetcable testosterone is not generally prescribed for women.
