Exercise is also good for keeping your heart and cardio-vascular system in good shape. In fact, a 30-minute exercise routine every day is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Why it’s important to stay active

Heart disease is one of the ailments that the majority of the people around the world suffer from. The chances of a heart attack or stroke increase greatly in people who have a sedentary lifestyle.

Prevention of cardiac problems is one of the main reasons why one should have an active lifestyle. Sedentary people are also at the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Also, it goes without saying that those who do not exercise also risk becoming obese. In addition, regular exercise has been shown to:

  • Reduces depression, anxiety and mood swings
  • Provides more energy
  • Promotes sound sleep
  • Controls weight
  • Improves self-image
  • Makes you look healthier and younger

Studies also reveal that people who exercise regularly and have a healthy lifestyle live longer than those who don’t.

Exercise Benefits to physical, mental and sexual health

One of the obvious benefits of exercise is a fit and well-toned body. But that is not all; exercise is also known to have positive effects on a person’s mental and sexual health.

Firstly, exercise controls weight by burning away the extra calories that add weight to the body. Also, regular exercise makes you feel less tired, which means you get to do more in lesser time.

Exercise is also known to boost your mood. In fact, people who suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues are recommended to exercise regularly.

Exercise can also bring back that spark into your sex life. So if you feel too tired for sex or are not as easily excited as before, then may be it is time to hit the gym or just go for a walk or run every day. Research also suggests that women who exercise regularly have enhanced arousal, when compared to those who don’t.

How does exercise boost hormone levels?

Exercise also affects the hormone levels in your body, just as it would affect your muscles and your cardiovascular health. Important “longevity” hormones like testosterone, HGH and thyroid hormone increase production when an individual is active.

However, care should be taken to do the right amount of exercise for positively affecting your hormones. Exercise is known to increase the release of peptide YY, which is known as the appetite-suppressing hormone, and decrease the release of the appetite-stimulating hormone, ghrelin.

Regular physical activity also releases epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are known for stimulating positive feelings in a person. Also, these hormones increase heart rate and result in breakdown of glycogen in the body, thereby supplying energy to the tissues. Exercise also releases the growth hormone, resulting in muscle development and strong bones.

Cardio vs. weights

Many people think that they either need to opt for cardio training, or weight training. The truth is that both forms of exercise are needed for the body. However, what you choose should be dependent on your fitness goals. Cardio exercise helps in improving your mental, physical and sexual health, increasing stamina, preventing disease and lengthening the lifespan.

Weight training, on the other hand, plays an important role in strengthening the muscles, toning the body and maintaining lean body mass. It also lessens the risks of osteoporosis and prevents injuries caused due to weak muscles.

Although there are many workout and “energy” drinks available, it would first be important to make sure you are in overall good health before taking any of these supplements, and always in moderation. In addition, having your hormone levels checked and optimized has been shown to give men energy and increase workout performance.
