Hormone Therapy FAQ's

What does AAG Health do?

Hormone Replacement Physicians. We are a network of physician’s offices that specialize in preventative medicine with an emphasis on hormone replacement therapy and age management services for adult men and women. Bio-identical hormone therapy can help you restore your hormones to their optimal levels and alleviate hormone-related symptoms like loss of energy and feeling tired all the time, loss of libido, low sex drive, muscle and bone loss, insomnia, depression, mood swings, night sweats, weight gain, skin dryness and hair loss, erectile dysfunction in men, hot flashes and vaginal dryness in women.

Hormone treatment is usually required due to a hormone deficiency or imbalance experienced during menopause in women and andropause or "male menopause" in men.  Call AAG Health at 1-800-325-1325  if you believe your testosterone, growth hormone, estrogen or progesterone levels are low. We can help restore your hormonal levels back to normal ranges and to more youthful levels with bio-identical hormones!

Where are you located?

Hormone treatment clinic locations. Our main hormone and age management clinic location is in Miami, South Florida however we have numerous hormone therapy clinic locations throughout the United States. We are always adding affiliate age medicine doctors who specialize in bio-identical hormone replacement so please check with us to see if we have a doctor specializing in age management, Testosterone Therapy, HGH Therapy, and natural hormone replacement - BHRT for men and women in your area.

Am I required to see one of your doctors?

Yes. All of our patients are required to see an AAG Health physician or affiliated doctor for the physical exam and consultation before any hormone replacement treatment or prescription for hormone medication or drugs may be considered.

Can I do this over the phone or internet?

No. For your safety and to comply with the various legal regulations throughout the country, all of our patients must see one of our physicians before starting a hormone therapy program including testosterone replacement, human growth hormone replacment, HCG, estrogen or progesterone hormone treatments.

How do I get started with hormone therapy?

Call AAG Health at 1-800-325-1325 to get started today. You may also get started by ordering the initial lab work to determine your current hormonal levels and condition of health to see if you qualify for a bio-identical hormone replacement treatment program.

If I go to one of your physicians will I automatically qualify for treatment?

No. You are required to do lab work before starting a hormone program. We will only treat patients with hormonal deficiencies including Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency (AGHD), Hypogonadism/Andropause, Menopause, "Low T" Low Testosterone, ED - Erectile Dysfunction or Hypothyroidism. If your hormone levels are optimal or there are contraindications to treatment then you may not qualify for hormone therapy. In addition, if our physician feels that you are looking to use the products for performance enhancement or any other non medical use you will be ineligible for hormone replacement treatment.

How are the hormones replaced?

Testosterone is replaced using either injections or a transdermal topical testosterone cream or gel formulated to your needs that is applied to the surface of the skin. Testosterone treatment is usually accompanied by estrogen blockers and HCG therapy.  Estrogen and progesterone is best taken via a specially formulated cream or in pill form. HGH (Somatropin - Human Growth Hormone) is taken by injection only although there are some Growth Hormone Supplements used with injectable HGH that can also help increase human growth hormone levels. Natural hormonal supplements and boosters like HCG to boost testosterone may also be used as part of an overall hormonal health program.

Do you accept insurance?

No. In order to provide the absolute best hormone treatment options without the unreasonable restrictions placed on patient choice by managed care HMOS's/PPO's, we do not accept any third party payments including insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. In addition we will not fill out any paperwork or respond to any inquiry from insurance companies.

What are your prices?

At AAG Health & Wellness we offer individualized hormone replacement therapy. We do not offer a “one size fits all” approach to hormone therapy and initially can only provide an estimated range of hormone treatment pricing. Everyone's hormonal profile is unique and therefore, our programs are designed based on your specific needs as determined by the physician. A personally tailored hormone replacement program is formulated based on lab work, physical exam, medical history and symptoms. We can only give exact pricing after you have been seen and evaluated by the physician. For further information on hormone treatment pricing please go to our pricing tab.

Is hormone therapy safe?

Yes. There are numerous studies that have come out over the past years that have attested to the safety of natural hormone replacement using bio-identical hormones. Remember, all AAG Health's hormone treatment programs are physician supervised and medically monitored to offer you absolute confidence and security. We only prescribe physiological dosages required to optimize your hormonal levels and we use only high quality bio-identical hormones in our therapy as medcially indicated. Natural hormones have been growing in popularity because they are highly effective and without the harsher side effects that can come with the use of synthetic chemicals or animal-derived hormones.

Are there side effects with Human Growth Hormone & Testosterone?

Hormone therapy benefits vs side effects. As with any medical program there is always a chance of minor side effects depending on the dosage of hormone medication you are taking. Because our doctors only prescribe medically appropriate dosages of natural-based, bio-identical hormones, the potential for side effects is minimized. In fact, less than 5% of our patients prescribed bioidentical hormone replacement medications experience minor side effects. These side effects are reversible and go away by simply reducing the dosage of the medication. All of our hormone treatment programs include follow up lab testing and review by your age management physician to ensure the correct dosage and minimize side effects even further.

When should I think about replacing my hormones?

When to replace hormones? In the average man and woman, hormones start to decline in the mid to late twenties. By age 35 declines are sufficient that symptoms may be evident. The best time to start replacing hormones is when you start to notice symptoms that affect your quality of life. In most people this happens between the ages of 35 and 50. However we have men in their low 30's , late 70's and 80's that have successfully benefited from our hormone therapy programs. If you are a man or women experiencing increased irritability, fatigue, loss of sex drive, trouble sleeping, loss of muscle and significant weight gain - you should have your hormone levels tested. A short Testosterone and HGH deficiency survey can help you determine how many hormone deficiency symptoms you may have. HGH and Testosterone Deficiency Test

How do I know if the hormone program is working?

Is my hormone therapy working? Typically, you will notice that you are feeling better within four to six weeks. However, we also do lab testing, body composition tests and bone density test while you are on the hormone treatment program. These follow up health and blood tests will show you exactly the improvements you are making with your hormone therapy. We carefully monitor you and fine tune your hormone treatment to its optimum levels. Our hormone programs also include comprehensive nutritional supplements and dietary guidelines that support hormone health and ensure hormone treatment success. Anti-Aging Vitamins and Supplements for Hormone Health

Beware of any hormone therapy programs that let you order hormones or prescription hormone products but do not provide you good follow up care with a licensed physician and a properly tailored hormone maintenance program. Hormone therapy with HGH, Testosterone, HCG and other bio-identical hormone medications requires adjusting your hormone drug dosages according to your ongoing medical indications and is an important part of successful hormone treatment protocols. I've seen other clinics advertised, why is AAG the best place to go to?

Our physicians carefully listen to you and personally tailor a hormone therapy program to meet your medical needs based on blood tests and comprehensive physical examination! Be careful with any clinic that does not require a physical exam with a doctor before starting male or female hormone replacement therapy. This is unsafe and unethical. AAG Health requires all patients to see a doctor before starting a hormone treatment program including testosterone treatment and human growth hormone therapy.

The doctor is the person who decides if HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is right for you, recommends the dosage of hormone medication and will only prescribe if there is medical need. Some other clinics push hormones on everyone regardless of medical need. In these clinics, a commissioned salesperson, not the doctor, is the person making treatment decisions. At AAG Health, our doctors are specialists in age management medicine and hormone optimization, and it is your dedicated hormone replacement physician who recommends and prescribes your hormone treatment medications as medically indicated. Hormone Doctors and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Comprehensive hormone treatment programs. Our hormone therapy programs also include all medications, the initial follow up lab work, all follow up consultations, and all follow up exams in the pricing. Other hormone centers charge extra for lab work and charge fees every time you talk to a doctor. Therefore, when you get a price from us you are confident that there are no hidden charges, “fees”, lab charges, or other hidden costs. We are so confident in our services that if you are not satisfied with the doctor, we will refund your doctor fees.

Do you recommend replacing both my testosterone hormone and human growth hormone at the same time?

Testosterone & HGH at the same time. If the doctor feels that you have a growth hormone deficiency and a testosterone deficiency he may recommend both Testosterone and HGH at the same time.  If you only have a deficiency in one hormone he will only recommend replacing that hormone. Some hormone treatment protocols may require auxilliary hormone medications, but only as prescribed by your physician. For example, if testosterone replacement therapy is required, the male hormone treatment program would include estrogen blockers and HCG to ensure an optimal testosterone level and testicular health. Human Growth Hormone has a 'bad reputation' in the media. Why is that?

Human Growth Hormone is a naturally occuring substance found in everyone's body. With age, a decline in HGH occurs and hormone replacement is required to restore your hormones to their youthful levels. This 'bad reputation' surrounding human growth hormone is unfortunate and not justified. The reason this reputation exists is because it has recently been the drug of choice by athletes and bodybuilders because of the incredible physiological benefits and performance boost they derive from using HGH, the Human Growth Hormone. These athletes take "superhuman" mega-dosages that are generally more than ten times greater than what a doctor would normally prescribe for HGH hormone replacment therapy. Of course, taking amounts this large can often lead to HGH hormone related side effects that then get reported by the media.

At AAG Health, your physician will only prescribe HGH, if you need HGH. This “need” is determined by your IGF-1 levels after having a hormone level blood test, careful consideration of your symptoms, your medical history and complete medical evaluation by your physician. Having a growth hormone deficiency can adversely affect your health. By bringing your HGH levels up to an optimal and more youthful level, you should feel better, have more energy, increase your sex drive and have a healthier life. Will hormone replacement cause my natural hormone production to decline?

Cycling of hormones is designed to minimize the possibility of a decline in your natural hormone production. Cycling is taking time off from hormone replacement. When outside (exogenous) hormones are introduced into the body, the gland producing that hormone senses that the body has an adequate supply of the hormone and does not need to work as hard and may become "lazy". Hormone cycling is mandatory for growth hormone and for men under 45 on testosterone therapy. In addition, on-cycle and post-cycle medications such as HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) can be prescribed to promote the natural production of testosterone and maximize results.

Will hormone therapy help sexual dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction can have many causes; however, replacing hormones can lead to significant improvement. We suggest raising your testosterone to a healthy level to boost your sex drive and address problems with erectile dysfunction caused by low testosterone. If there is still a need for additional assistance, there are other hormone treatment options available after talking to your doctor. If testosterone levels are low, hormone replacement has been successful in over 90% of patients with sexual dysfunction including low libido, loss of sex drive and erectile dysfunction due to Low T.

Is hormone replacement the same thing as steroid abuse?

No. When we treat patients we only treat those patients with hormone deficiencies. We also only use bio-identical hormones which are identical in structure to what your body already produces. We also only prescribe therapeutic dosages of hormone medication intended to bring your levels to an optimal level that is still within the clinically normal range. Athletes who abuse steroids generally have normal hormone levels to begin with. They take steroids in order to increase muscle mass or get an unfair advantage in competitive sports, not to treat a medical condition. These athletes are seeking super-physiological dosages that are usually greater than five times the recommended therapeutic hormone dosage. They also usually take blends or “stacks” of designer anabolic steroid drugs that are not bio-identical in nature. This is very dangerous and can lead to serious medical conditions.

What health conditions is bio-identical hormone replacement helpful for?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can be used to treat the following health conditions or symptoms caused by a hormone deficiency or imbalance:

Andropause (Men's Menopause - "Low T") - Andropause is the period of a man's life beginning around the age of 40 marked by a decline in testosterone hormone levels secreted by testicles and stimulated by the pituitary gland. A man's body changes and symptoms of hypogonadism or androgen deficiency commence. Symptoms caused by low testosterone (Low T) include loss of sex drive and desire, erectile dysfunction or impotence, soft erections, loss of morning erections, depression, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, weight gain, extreme fatigue and feeling tired all the time, a loss of energy, loss of muscle and bone mass (oteoporosis), muscle softness, cardiovascular disease, hair loss, lowered physical agility, memory loss, lowered mental acuity, focus, concentration, ambition and drive.

ANDROPAUSE: There Are Two Types Of Androgen Deficiency or (Hypogonadism):

Primary and Secondary Hypogonadism

  • Primary male hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency) - when the male Leydig cells in the testes have lost their capacity to secrete testosterone at normal, youthful hormone levels.
  • Secondary male hypogonadism (testosterone deficiency) - when the LH or luteinizing hormone messengers from the brain's pituitary gland are no longer strong enough or frequent enough to properly stimulate the Leydig cells to secrete testosterone.
  • Low testosterone levels may result due to decreased hormone production and / or due to an increased conversion of testosterone to estradiol via the aromatase enzyme or to estrogen via the DHT path.
  • Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and promotes sex drive and male performace, masculine strength, increased muscle mass and bone density, drive and ambition. Healthy testosterone levels provide for normal sexual function, a good quality of sleep, increased mental acuity, physical strength, energy, stamina and endurance; coversion of fat to muscle; improved heart function; it also promotes improvements in mood, confidence and a sense of well-being. Perimenopause (Pre-Menopause) - The transitional period leading up to menopause during which time a women's body starts to undergo hormonal, physiological and endocrinological changes resulting from the decline and cessation of ovarian hormone production. Hormone replacement therapy for women helps to restore the delicate balance of Estradiol, Estrone, Estriol and Progesterone.  Symptoms of perimenopause include irregular menstrual periods including strength and duration of menstrual periods, hot flashes, night sweats and chills, vaginal dryness, vaginal discomfort or itching, loss of sexual desire and a lowered libido, less inability to orgasm, trouble sleeping and insomnia, mood swings, irritability, extreme tiredness and fatigue, emotional outbursts and tearfulness, feelings of depression and sadness. The duration of perimenopause can last for 4 to 6 years and ends with complete cessation of the monthly menstruation for 12 consecutive months known as "amenorrhea".

Menopause - A gradual process that happens when a woman's ovaries make less estrogen and progesterone, the delicate balance of her hormones  is disrupted as her lifetime supply of eggs is depleted and ovulation gradually comes to an end. A woman is considered to have reached her menopause when she hasn't menstruated for a minimum of 12 consecutive months. Pregnancy has still been known to occur up to 2 years beyond that point so birth control should still be practiced. Natural menopause typically occurs between the ages of 40 to 59. Symptoms of Menopause Include: Loss of libido and sexual appetite, vaginal dryness, itching and discomfort, hot flashes, hot flushes, night sweats and chills, extreme fatigue, inability to sleep and insomnia, irritability, mood swings, tearfulnes, depression, dry and wrinkling skin, brittle hair and nails, social withdrawal, shyness, loss of enthusiasm for life or ability to cope with daily life.

Thyroid Conditions - An imbalance of the thyroid hormone can affect every metabolic function in a person's body. The thyroid gland is the body's master hormone regulator and are important in regulating body energy and the body's use of other hormones. Thyroid hormones modulate metabolism, carbohydrates, proteins, fat metabolism, vitamin synthesis, digestion, muscle and nerve action, circulation, hormone excretion, oxygen utilization, sexual function, tissue maturation and growth.

Diseases of the thyroid gland can result in either too much production - an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), or in too little - an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), thyroid nodules or goiter.

Fibromyalgia - Fibromyalgia is a serious neural disorder that causes chronic aching pain and sore muscles, long-term sleep disorders, muscle fatigue and joint pain. Fibromyalgia is associated with abnormal levels of neurotransmitters that adversely impact the body's systems. Symptoms include chronic and widespread body pain, hot/cold body temperatures, IBS - irritable bowel syndrome, inablity to concentrate or focus, immune system impairment and inability fully heal. Fibromyalgia was known as "fibrositis" and afflicts many people with chronic pain, joint stiffness, muscle weakness and tenderness without easily detectable inflammation by the physician. The chronic pain contributes to long-term bouts of restless sleep and insomnia, sheer fatigue and exhaustion, anxiety, depression and chronic digestive tract and bowel disturbances.

Weight Gain & Weight Loss Resistance - Progesterone, Estrogen, HGH, Cortisol, Thyroid, DHEA and Testosterone imbalances normally lead to uncontrollable weight gain despite exercise and diet. Loss of muscle mass and bone mass and changes in body composition along with fat accumulation, fluid retention and the inability to recover from physical exercise or workouts are brought on by hormone deficiencies and imbalances. Hormonal supplements and treatments are integral parts of modern medicine in helping address weight gain and obesity caused by hormonal health-related problems.

Adrenal Fatigue or Insufficiency - Affecting every organ in the human body, adrenal fatigue is a stress-induced health condition brought on by decreased adrenal gland function. The adrenal glands secrete precise and balanced amounts of essential steroid hormones including cortisol and DHEA, and the adrenal glands are also very closely tied to healthy thyroid function. Hypoadrenia or adrenal exhaustion can cause chronic infection, extreme fatigue, inability to sleep and insomnia, joint pain, increased allergies, menopausal type symptoms, hypoglycemia, IBS - irrtable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression.

DHEA replacement therapy - DHEA is the most common steroid hormone in the body and is produced mainly by the adrenal glands. DHEA is metabolized from Pregnenolone, the body's “true master hormone” which itself is metabolized from cholesterol. DHEA is also metabolized into the other sex hormones including testosterone and the estrogens. DHEA levels drop dramatically as people age, and especially more quickly in women during menopause. Low or seriously decreased DHEA levels have been implicated in heart and cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, clinical depression, inflammation, arthritis, immune disorders, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease. Supplementing DHEA and Pregnenolone can have a direct impact by lowering cholesterol, burning fat, fighting inflammation, improving cognitive and sexual function, and boosting the immune system.

Fighting Inflammation and Disease - Inflammation and chronic inflammation is caused by internal chemicals called inflammatory cytokines that are released as part of the natural immune system response. These internal chemicals including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin 1 (beta) [IL-1(?)] and leukotriene are present in ever greater concentrations as people age. Higher levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body drastically increases the onset of serious health conditions and disease. Reducing the concentration of inflammatory cytokines in the body and free radicals reduces the risk of serious disease. Improved diet, nutrition and hormone replacment therapy strives to restore  the youthful balance of hormones in the body helping to fight inflammation and disease brought on by the aging process. Why hormone optimization with bio-identical hormones?

Many age medicine physicians are increasingly prescribing natural, bioidentical hormones for their patient's hormone therapy. Physicians are discovering that bio-identicals can be highly effective without posing the level of risk and harmful side effects of chemical or animal-derived hormone medications. Contact an AAG Health hormone therapy specialist, age management doctor or age management medicine clinic near you to discover the natural path to healthy aging.

Your hormone levels will decline as you age and as a healthier hormone therapy option - bioidentical hormone therapy can replenish the hormones that your body will need to function. Bioidentical hormone doctors and clinics offer natural or bioidentical hormones versus animal-derived, "bio-similar" or chemical synthetic hormones. Bioidentical hormones are molecule-by-molecule, exactly the same as the hormones produced by your body including HGH, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA and others. A bioidentical hormone replacement physician has the experience to properly assess your individual medical needs and work with you to optimize and restore your hormone levels through a customized HRT medical plan designed specifically for you.
